For the past month I have been contemplating making the switch to a push reel. I also inherited a free lawn mower from the previous owners of the house and it is definitely on its last leg. After reading this I am definitely making the switch! Battery powered mowers are still heavily over priced for me to justify having one for my small lawn.
I hate the exhaust and noise of the small engine. I’ve been planning to attempt an electric conversion on mine. But this would probably be a better approach. That and taking out half of my yard. We used to have some big 30’ reel mowers. They left the grass looking great, but they were more maintenance. They required frequent adjustments and fairly frequent sharpening, and they were particular about the height of the grass. But those were different animals. I might just try your approach, or at least buy one to electrify it.
I feel so stupid for not buying a push reel. My backyard takes about 5 minutes to mow with an expensive electric push mower.
The one thing I do like, and you called this out, is that it’s nice to mulch leaves during the fall. Extra grass food!!
You're an electric guy, so it makes sense that you have that type of mower. It's never too early to try a push reel mower.
Who you calling “electric guy”, analog guy?
Our differences unite us!

Do it! I'm glad I could convince someone. My parents think I'm weird for using a push reel mower haha.
I'll let you know how it goes!
You've sold me. I've been thinking about making more time to put some sweat equity into my home, and a push reel looks like the best way to do it
Awesome! I think you'll enjoy it. Let me know what you think.
Ya, sod farm mower. It was pretty cool to watch it fold up How hard is the reel mower to push?
The mower isn't super difficult to push. You just need to be steady so the blades turns consistently.

Wow, a 30' reel mower seems insane. I'm guessing you used those on the sod farm?
An electric reel mower would be super interesting. I know smaller gas-powered reel mowers are used to mow greens on golf courses.
